Millie took a hiatus in leading The Miami Group from February 2012 to July 2013, when she served as a presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Labor as the Southeast Regional Representative for Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. Responsible for amplifying key programs and initiatives of the department and President Obama’s administration, she served as liaison to federal, state and local government officials and community stakeholders. During her tenure in the Department of Labor, Millie worked with veterans’ groups, federal contractors, other federal agencies, and businesses of all sizes, organizing and participating in job fairs to help veterans find jobs; women’s, farmworkers’, faith-based and community organizations, educational institutions, and elected officials in disseminating information on workers’ rights, workforce development, equal pay, and prevention of human trafficking; and chambers of commerce, business and health care organizations to provide information about the Affordable Care Act implementation. Believing that community involvement is the best way to make the world a better place for all, Millie was a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem in Miami-Dade County since 2003, and serves as President of the Board of Directors of Orchestra Miami, the premier non-profit symphony orchestra of Miami. Milllie held elected office in the Kendall Community Council 12 from 2003 to 2006, and was Vice Chair in 2005. In 2004, Millie received the Latina of Excellence Award from Hispanic magazine and in 2013 the Glass Ceiling Award from the Florida Diversity Council.
